We offer optional heat transfer surface enhancements to maximize thermal performance. The more thermally efficient a coil is, the smaller and less expensive the coil.
These enhancements for plate fins create a more turbulent fluid flow pattern across the fin or tube surfaces, increasing heat transfer. Some enhancements also provide more surface area for additional improvement.
As turbulence increases, so does the fluid's resistance to air flow. Each of the following fin enhancements creates a more aggressive air flow pattern, which increases the air friction across the fin surfaces.
When using such enhancements the coil design must balance its size, fin density and fin pattern with an air friction level that the fan can handle. Cleanliness of the air and potential moisture condensation also need to be considered.
We also offer several fluid turbulation enhancements for inside the coil tubes. These are specific to the type of fluid, as they have a major impact on the fluid's pressure drop.
Spring Turbulators - Resembles a stretched out wire spring, and improves the thermal conduction of viscous liquids such as oils. Available in brass and stainless steel for 3/8", 1/2", 5/8" and 1" OD tubes.
Bead Turbulators - Small aluminum balls are placed in the coil tubes. Used with low viscosity oils.
Twisted Tape Turbulators - A flat metal strip that is twisted. Used with liquids having a viscosity similar to water, and some gases or refrigerants. Sized for 1/2" and 5/8" OD tubes and made of aluminum, copper, carbon or stainless steel.
Rifled Tubing - Small grooves are cut into the internal tube wall providing better evaporation or condensing of refrigerants. Available in 3/8", 1/2" and 5/8" OD copper tubes.
Inner Fin Tubes - A special fabrication process in which an aluminum strip is rippled then wrapped inside a 5/8" OD tube. Due to the high pressure drop it creates, its use is limited to compressed refrigerants and gases.
These enhancements are available on our basic coil product lines and on many custom/specialized coils, depending on the tube size and materials required. Our engineers will evaluate if such enhancements are practical and cost effective when designing your coil.
